News: Transport must help meet EU’s climate target, say MEPs

MEPs have called on EU governments to resurrect a proposal to link passenger car taxes to carbon dioxide emissions.

News: 24-25/04/2008 - T&E conference: Towards implementation of truck charges in Catalonia and Spain, opportunities of the revised Eurovignette Directive

News: Bad air quality

Air quality is getting worse in the EU, according to a report into concentrations of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone, and local traffic is largely to blame. The report by the European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change said legal limits were exceeded in a ‘considerably higher’ number of measured zones in 2005 than in 2001. PM was exceeded in 44% of the zones examined.

News: Charge for health

The London city congestion charge celebrated its fifth birthday last month with the news that it had made a minor contribution to improving human health. Scientists at two London institutes calculate that since February 2003 1888 extra years of life have been saved among the seven million population of London. Inside the charge zone, an extra 183 years of life have been saved for every 100 000 residents.

News: Congestion charge trebled for gas guzzlers

The mayor of London says he wants to charge drivers of the highest-consumption cars three times the cost of entering the city centre – €32.50 instead of €10.40 – to send out a signal that gas guzzlers are not good for climate change and don’t belong in cities.

News: 09/04/08 - A Price Worth Paying: Making Road Charging Work for Europe

On 9 April 2008, the Slovenian Presidency of the EU in cooperation with T&E, the European Federation for Transport and Environment, hosted a major international conference on the future of road charging in Europe. The discussion focussed on economic, technical and political aspects of road charging for HGVs and experiences in Europe, in the context of the preparation of a new EU legislative framework on fair and efficient pricing.
