Swiss citizens yesterday overwhelmingly voted for sustainable transport by rejecting in a referendum an initiative that would have expanded the road transport system in Switzerland’s environmentally sensitive alpine area. The Directive 2003/59/EC, on training for professional drivers entered into force on 10 September. From now on, all professional drivers will have to undergo training in order to minimise safety risks as well as reduce environmental impacts by cutting fuel consumption. On 23 July, the European Commission adopted a communication on the revision of the Eurovignette Directive. The new proposal, long awaited by NGOs and other stakeholders, is a disappointment. T&E has called for its rejection by the European Parliament and the Council. It confuses the concepts of pricing and financing, does not encourage sustainable transport and, overall, is insufficient and unambitious in scope.
