In a letter published in today's European Voice, T&E argues that a number of independent experts, scientists and institutions have said that land use change must be accounted for in the calculation of overall greenhouse gas emissions from biofuels. To accompany the letter T&E has published a review of these studies, together with the relevant passages.

Two mathematical alterations have changed the tone of the EU's debate on biofuels. Environmental organisations are sceptical about the science and especially concerned about the EU's continuing refusal to recognise the impact on land use from biofuel production.

Jos Dings writes in today's European Voice: It is unfortunate, especially considering the millions of euros his company is spending on advertising its views on EU biofuel policy, that the president and CEO of Abengoa Bioenergy is apparently not aware of studies that calculate the impacts of land-use change on lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from biofuel production.

Four environmental NGOs have asked the Commission president to review the EU’s 10% target for biofuels in transport. T&E has also moved to counter misinformation that suggests enough biofuels could be grown in Europe without affecting land use.

In last week's European Voice (Letters, 2-8 October), Javier Salgado-Leirado, the president of Abengoa, claimed that all the biofuel crops needed to reach the EU's proposed 10% target by 2020 could be grown in Europe without direct or indirect land-use change.
